Promoting hatred through social networks

After many blogs publicized and protested a Facebook page, which publicized a third intifada, Facebook finally removed it. Facebook has said that any page, which threatens another or publicizes hate, will be removed.
Although it may not have started off as a page towards hatred, the comments and publicity it received, has turned it into a negative and violent page. Fox news was informed by Noyes, a spokesman for Facebook, that "after administrators of the page received repeated warnings about posts that violated [Facebook] policies, [Facebook] removed the page.” While many thanked Facebook for removing the page, The Anti Defamation League “filled an official complaint against Facebook” for keeping the page up for so long, as it sustained public violence. Do you believe Facebook is able to regulate all the Facebook pages set up towards animosity, whether it be towards ones peers or even a larger nation as whole? If so, by the time Facebook acts accordingly do you think enough damage would have already taken place amongst those on Facebook?

  1. I believe Facebook has a right to regulate what content is posted on its website. There is such a thing as freedom of speech, but Facebook is a website created and owned by specific people who have the right to turn anyone they feel is misusing their software away. That being said, the damage very well can be done before it is taken down....I don't think there is a way to prevent that unless a moderator is set up to read everything before it is posted, which is ridiculous.

  2. I definitely think that facebook needs to come up with a fair and balanced process to deal with the questions that come up asking if they should take down certain pages. Deciding to take down pages that show hatred towards a certain group would be a bold decision.
