Stoping Evil?

Bill O'Reilly, after the U.S killed Osama, spoke of the Muslim world not supporting America or the President himself. In London, pro and anti-pro Osama followers held up signs showing their support towards the Muslim world. They specified that the “biggest oppressor, the biggest criminal in the world today, is Barack Obama…and his allies...” they say that the U.S. will die. The Utah senator, Orrin Hatch, states how unbelievable it is that they do not give the U.S. credit for their operations.

After the capture of Osama, American citizens as well as the world, felt all different sorts of feelings at once. While some were scared, others decided to celebrate. Personally, I felt a little strange celebrating, since we often see in the media Arabs celebrating the murder of Jewish blood. It is upsetting as Jews when photos are shown of candy being thrown around and celebrations taking place. In this following video, it shows the worlds reaction and the media presenting the mark of Osama’s death as a party. Do you think that the reaction is appropriate since we as Jews understand the severity of celebrating ones death?

Media Putting Iran in Risk

According to the article, Freed journalist: Iranian regime’s ‘information fears’, it discusses the journalist, Maziar Bahari who was arrested in Tehran for joining efforts with the media in western cultures. He was arrested for using the information he knew “against [their] master, Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.” He was considered a terrorist. He released “scenes of Iran’s militia shooting from their base at protesters- some of whom had been throwing petrol bombs at the militia.” He was arrested a week after all the images were released around the world.
For Iran, information is seen as a threat. When information is released, they demand to know who it was released to. Luckily, Maziar Bahari, was considered to have a high profile case and therefore was released on bail.
The media, including social networking, is a threat to Iran. At first, it was used as a tool for Iran to spread their messages to the world. Today, the Internet (including videos and simple messaging back and forth) is a significant component for the citizens within Iran to talk amongst each other. For the country itself, they fear for their lives that the information they hide will be released, and the social networking turning against what they once aspired it to do with it. (BBC News)

Promoting hatred through social networks

After many blogs publicized and protested a Facebook page, which publicized a third intifada, Facebook finally removed it. Facebook has said that any page, which threatens another or publicizes hate, will be removed.
Although it may not have started off as a page towards hatred, the comments and publicity it received, has turned it into a negative and violent page. Fox news was informed by Noyes, a spokesman for Facebook, that "after administrators of the page received repeated warnings about posts that violated [Facebook] policies, [Facebook] removed the page.” While many thanked Facebook for removing the page, The Anti Defamation League “filled an official complaint against Facebook” for keeping the page up for so long, as it sustained public violence. Do you believe Facebook is able to regulate all the Facebook pages set up towards animosity, whether it be towards ones peers or even a larger nation as whole? If so, by the time Facebook acts accordingly do you think enough damage would have already taken place amongst those on Facebook?

News coverage in Libya?

In a New York Times article, Libyan Woman Struggles to Tell Media of Her Rape, it describes the experience of a Libyan woman, under the name of Eman al-Obeidy, her tragedy with the members of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi’s militia. She ran to journalist to explain her story of the sexual abuse the men have put her through. She revealed her bruises and scars the 15 men left after mistreating her. “For the members of the foreign news media here at the invitation of the government of Colonel Qaddafi — and largely confined to the Rixos Hotel except for official outings — the episode was a reminder of the brutality of the Libyan government and the presence of its security forces even among the hotel staff”.
Once she escaped after two days, she demanded to speak to the news service Reuters and The New York Times. She admitted that “There is no media coverage outside.” She showed the cameras her bruises to inform the public of the current situation in Libya. While the journalist were interviewing and shielding her, journalist were violated by Libya’s security. Afterwards, authorities said that she was ill and the stories of her assault were “fantasies.”
Attached is the article with a video of the horrific scene:

Obama and the constitution

Fox news published an article, “Lawmakers Angry With Obama Over Libyan Strike, Warn Administration Lacks 'End-Game'” discussing the poor reviews Obama is receiving over the missile strikes onto Libya. President Obama did not turn to congress before finalizing his decision of what to do over the situation, creating disturbance over the people. Rep. Dennis Kucinich has said that this violates the constitution and that “this is a nightmare.” Libya did not threaten America, resulting in America now possibly heading to war with Libya. Many people are angered by the decision Obama carried out and are waiting for him to turn to congress and consult with them. Rep. Jerrold Nadler wrote "the Constitution, rightly, does not allow a single person to commit the nation to war, even where there is a good reason to do so.” Others such as John Boehner, believes it had to be done, although agrees that Obama should have confirmed with congress before doing so. Below is a video from Fox news stating the issues of the power, which were taken, advantaged of.

Terrorist Attack in Samaria

Here is a video posted by Arutz Sheva of Prime Minister Netanyahu speaking of the horrific stabbings done to the Fogel family in Samaria by Palestinian terrorists.
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/142849
Also posted, are brutal images of the stabbings (very graphic). The Fogel family released these images to show the world that it was not a house set up for killings, like the world perceives most of the terrorist attacks in Israel.
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/142846
According to CNN, the Palestinians disregards the terrorist attacks while the United Nations condemned the murder.
Do you believe that by posting these images the world will accept the truth in the terrorist attacks?

Women's rights in Afghanistan

After the Taliban took control, women in Afghanistan lost any hope for equality. They hoped that with the fall of the Taliban, that there will be a change, but now face cultural barriers. Too little is being done to help the women in Afghanistan. The government is very customary and views the women with a lower status, as the society always had.
Many are investing money and time to increase the opportunities for women, particularly focusing on schools. More girls are now attending school than ever before. Due to the lack of motivation, most women stop their education at the sixth grade. Originally there was excitement over the fall of the Taliban, creating more wishful thinking for women that they will one day rise to equality. Women are now a little disappointed due to the lack of support from the government.
Saied Morgan Mustafa, a technical and policy deputy at the Ministry of Women’s Affairs believes that it will take at least ten years for the society to view women less traditionally. The Ministry of Women’s Affairs will begin to set up shelters for women who leave their homes, mostly due to abuse. Many believe that by the government controlling these shelters, it will only be a start of the government controlling all women organizations. Is it worth supporting a country, which plans to manage women shelters, and organizations, which are not progressing (is it worth the time and money spent)?

"CNN CREW WITNESSES AIR BOMBING IN LIBYA"

Earlier in class today, we spoke about how CNN once showed images and videos from the Iraq war. These images and videos in which they presented were very violent, as they showed every bomb and injury, which had occurred on battlegrounds. Here, it is interesting to see CNN post a video of reporters briefly listening to sounds of bombs rather than images but hearing it from a reporter who did in fact whiteness the bombings. I think this shows a big turn in how we, as American citizens, understand the war. We no longer are faced with the emotional reality of the war but rather the facts.

Libyan Protesters Using A Muslim Dating Site To Communicate

Protesters of the Libyan government are using Mawada, a Muslim dating site. On this site, they are writing “secret” messages speaking about the revolution. Mahmoudi, leader of the Ekhtalef movement, has said to ABC News that he “felt it was an obligation to use [him]self, to use [his] skills in a field of Web development and Web design to pass on the messages and inform the world," As he created a profile and spoke to his male colleagues with hidden codes within their writing, he quickly had 171,323 followers. The Internet in Libya discontinued as of last Saturday, ending his connections with the fellow citizens who he lived amongst.

Who will be controlling the Internet?

Internet is not controlled by the government, which gives all the power to the people. Everything in which is created or linked through the Internet has no need for government permission, which makes it even that much more powerful for the public to state how they feel, and in some cases, changing how others perceive the current events. In this months Reason magazine (Peter Suderman), it states that the FCC wants to begin regulating what people decide to write and do through the Internet. Whether or not the FCC follows through, it is changing the way we as people think. Not only will personal opinions be closely watched, companies and others who advertise will have more regulations in how they advertise. Do you think this is attacking our freedom to express ourselves?

Sen. Scott Brown Sexually Abused

The media plays a big role in affecting how people think and how they view certain issues. The Massachusetts senator, Scott Brown, opens up about being abused as a kid. Being both sexually and physically abused, Brown knew what was going on was not right. He is coming to tell his past to help those who are/were in his position to stand up for themselves, and recognize for themselves that an unjust deed will not go unpunished. He says that while voting on government programs, his past does not influence him. He is voting against government assistant programs because he "believes it is critical to find a way to use the money available rather than run up the nation's deficit." (Fox News)

Going Green, Saving Money.

Saving tens of billions of dollars, Pesident Obama is chaneling the nations energy to be more efficient. Although President George W. Bush had done so in 2003, Obama is putting the program into use. U.S. Congress “is moving to enact a five-year freeze on non-security spending.” The government has begun to slowly cut down in order to save money. From military bases to inefficient computers, the government is saving millions of dollars. Bush showed his citizens how serious he is toward this program that he renovated his own house in Texas to fit the criteria in order to save money. In all areas of saving money, the U.S. government is more aware of regulating the money they spend on energy that can be easily conserved.

SPEED RAIL PROJECT.

According to Fox News, an article was posted by William La Jeunesse, degrading Obama's plan which will spend $58 billion over the next six years on a speed rail project. The article stated that one of the main issues with this plan is that they are building the speed rail next to a jail, where no one would be able to take it. Although it may help set up more potential jobs, is it worth the billions of dollars?
